After producing records for several artists and writing songs for Cash Money Records, co-founder of the label Birdman, Young Money Entertainment owner Lil Wayne and rapper Diddy, Derülo signed to minor recording label Beluga Heights.
As the flagship artist for the joint venture between Warner Bros. Records and super-producer J.R. Rotem's label Beluga Heights, Miami-born Jason Derulo ruled the airwaves last year with his three smash hit singles, “Whatcha Say,” “In My Head,” and “Ridin’ Solo,” off his self-titled debut album, Jason Derulo, which debuted at No. 4 on the Digital Albums chart and No. 11 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart. With the 3x-platinum debut single "Whatcha Say" (an irresistible slice of finger-snapping, futuristic pop-R&B that spent four consecutive weeks atop the Pop chart), and the 2x-platinum second single “In My Head,” the 21-year-old singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor became the first male solo artist to score consecutive No. 1’s on Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart in the chart’s 17-year-history with his first two entries. Derulo’s third single, “Ridin’ Solo,” was also certified 2x-platinum in the U.S. Derulo has sold more than 13 million singles and 850,000 albums worldwide. The album’s smash singles are just part of its appeal. An uncategorizable blend of pop, rock, electronic, and R&B elements, Jason Derulo showcases this exciting newcomer’s many talents.
In January 2010, Derulo wrapped a six-week stint on the road with Lady Gaga on her red-hot, sold-out “Monster Ball” tour of North America. In February, he made his feature film debut in MTV Films’ Turn the Beat Around. He has performed on American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The View, Live with Regis & Kelly, Lopez Tonight, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, while his videos have racked up more than 300 million collective views on YouTube. In August, Derulo won a 2010 Teen Choice Award for “Choice Music: Album, R&B.” He has also been nominated for a 2011 NAACP Image Award, an American Music Award, an ARIA and MOBO Award, two 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, and a Much Music Award. After touring with Black Eyed Peas in Canada in July, Derulo hit the road for a headlining world tour last fall. He is currently in the studio recording his second album for Beluga Heights/Warner Bros. Records, which is due for release in late summer. Close
